This week’s weekly bite is one of my all-time favorites. Taking us to Scarborough, ME is St. Joes Cafe - a teeny tiny counter-service restaurant with some of the best sandwiches in the area. St. Joes is also “Home to the Bennie”; a delicious fried dough treat that is so good it can accompany any meal - breakfast, or lunch. I’ve been going to St. Joes since I was a little kid and love just about everything on the menu, but here are just some of my favorite bites.
One of my favorite breakfast sandwiches is the Pesto; an Egg White Omelette, Fresh Spinach, Basil Pesto, Tomatoes, and Goat Cheese. The sandwich is normally served on a wheat english muffin which is delicious, and pretty guilt-free as far as breakfast sandwiches go. However, St. Joes has some of the best homemade biscuits I’ve ever had, so I occasionally like to substitute the english muffin for one of those. The last time I went, I also added sausage to the sandwich, which was totally personal preference and definitely not as healthy, but absolutely delicious. Sometimes you have to treat yourself, you know?
This next sandwich is one of my boyfriend’s favorites, and any meat-lovers out there will love this one. It’s called the Big Joe, and its loaded; Egg, Ham, Sausage, Bacon, American Cheese, and Hash Brown. This usually comes on a biscuit, but Parker subbed in an Everything Bagel. That’s the thing at St. Joes: you can sub in and out anything you want, and you can’t go wrong - everything is delicious.
The beauty of the breakfast sandwiches is that they’re served all day, and if you’re like me and breakfast is your favorite meal, that’s great news. However, that’s not to say this cute little cafe doesn’t have lunch options that are just as mouthwatering. My favorite is the Sweet Beet Wrap; a whole wheat wrap with roasted beets & sweet potatoes, red onions, and field greens, tossed in a house made Carrot Ginger Yogurt dressing. YUM. It’s clean, fresh, and just as delicious as it is healthy.
Sweet Beet Wrap - All lunch sandwiches are also served with a mini brownie.
Now, when you’re going to St. Joes you must try the Bennies. It’s St. Joes’s version of the traditional Beignet pastry, originating in New Orleans. They’re essentially small puffs of fried dough, coated in powdered sugar. What’s not to like? These little guys come in plates of 4, 8, or 12 with your choice of dipping sauces (Chocolate, Blueberry, Maple Cinnamon, or Raspberry sauce). My favorites are the Maple Cinnamon or Raspberry.
St. Joes might be tiny in size, but its food is large in flavor. It’s perfect for sandwiches on-the-go, a cute and quick date, or just a little pick-me-up for your day. There is a sandwich option for everyone here, and Bennies that will keep you coming back for more.
